Health Interpreter Training

Introductory Course - 15 hours

Objective:

This 15-hour program provides an introduction to the basic skills used during the triadic interview. The curriculum includes topics such as interpreting skills, code of ethics, triadic and cross cultural communication skills, medical terminology and professional protocols.

  • Basic skills for successful interpreting in Primary Care setting
  • How to develop effective triadic (client-provider-interpreter) relationships
  • Professional ethics
  • Working in a cross-cultural setting
  • Medical terminology in target language(s)
  • Patient - Provider Confidentiality
  • Review of body systems

Target Audience:

English speaking individuals who serve as interpreters in other languages. This course does not have a language component

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive a certificate of attendance

Comprehensive Course - 48 hours

Objective:

The 48-hour program incorporates the introductory training plus additional competency skills in medical terminology, culture and delivery of health care, interpreting in the primary care setting. Role playing and medical terminology is also incorporated into each session. Practical applications of fundamental interpreting skills

  • How to develop effective triadic (client-provider-interpreter) relationships

  • Working in a cross-cultural setting
  • Medical terminology in target language(s)
  • Patient - Provider Confidentiality
  • Review of body systems
  • Effective communication in the triad (client-provider-interpreter)
  • Listening and memory skills
  • Comprehensive medical terminology in targeting language(s)
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology vital to effective medical interpreting
  • Methods of interpreting in special settings

Target Audience:

Individuals who are fluent in Spanish and English both orally and written

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive a certificate of attendance
